Note: After finishing high school, students can continue their education at a university or university college. Most universities and university colleges are public and receive education in them for students free of charge. All expenses are paid by the state. However, usually students must pay a small training fee per semester. There are also private university colleges. In them, part of the costs for education students pay for themselves. Expenses for public schools and universities are paid by the state, and education for the population is free of charge. However, students of both public and private institutions of higher learning must themselves pay for educational material. This means that they themselves must buy textbooks and supplies. Modern society depends on high employment, technology, production and innovation. Therefore, Norway needs a highly educated population. The state contributes to this by offering all wishing to receive higher education on an equal basis.
