It is always exciting to see how my clients react when we create a weekly schedule together (based on the pattern on the left) and see how much time is actually available to them. For the first time, some of you may be seriously asking yourself where love is going. And it doesn’t even take a lot of outside help to realize that electronic entertainment is often a very hungry time eater … A young vocational student once said thoughtfully: “Awesome, how much free time I need!”
Is time really the problem?
Admittedly, the above calculation does not work for everyone. There may be additional therapy lessons, some of them have more homework or have to prepare scouting exercises … and, and, and.
But if everything always comes at the expense of learning, the question arises whether really a lack of time is the problem. Isn’t it rather that what needs to be done is something unpleasant? Something we might prefer not to do? Or something we struggle with?
Thought experiments bring knowledge
Small thought experiments can provide answers to this question. We replace “I don’t have time” with other statements and see what they do:
“It is not important to me.”
How does that feel? Sometimes it helps if we become a little more specific: “Learning is not as important to me as gaming.” Or: “Chilling with my friends is more important to me than good grades.” That may be the hard truth. Learning is not that important to me. If so, I have to accept the consequences. It’s not that important to me now … maybe later.
