Johar Hall Introduce
As young individuals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with aspirations of serving our beloved nation in the Armed Forces, we often hear about the rigorous and esteemed selection process that leads to becoming an officer. At the heart of this crucial journey for many of us is Johar Hall, a significant part of the Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) facility in Kohat. It's not a 'university' in the traditional academic sense, offering degrees, but rather a highly specialized institution that plays a pivotal role in evaluating and selecting future leaders for the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy. Many of us have cherished memories, often filled with anticipation and determination, from our time attending tests at this very place.
Johar Hall symbolizes a critical juncture for candidates aiming for a career in the Armed Forces. It's where dreams are tested, and potential is uncovered. As one aspiring Flying Officer in the PAF aptly put it, "There is no defined criteria for selection in ISSB in my thinking, ISSB only see the intention and determination of candidate." This sentiment resonates deeply with us because we understand that beyond academic qualifications, the armed forces seek individuals with strong character, integrity, and unwavering resolve. The process at Johar Hall, under the watchful eyes of GTOs (Group Testing Officers), Deputies, and Psychiatrists, is designed to bring out these innate qualities, ensuring that only the most suitable candidates are recommended.
For us, the youth of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Johar Hall represents a chance to prove ourselves and embark on an outstanding career dedicated to national service. It's a place where fairness and neutrality are paramount, as emphasized by the advice to be "unbiased and neutral" when undergoing the tests. This rigorous and multi-faceted assessment process is essential for identifying individuals who possess the unique blend of intelligence, leadership, physical prowess, and psychological resilience required to lead in challenging environments. Whether it’s for the Pakistan Military Academy, PAF Academy, or Pakistan Naval Academy, the journey often begins with the comprehensive evaluation conducted within the premises that include Johar Hall. It's a place where we truly get to "show up yourself and find yourself eligible or not for the outstanding job of Armed Forces."
Johar Hall is located within the Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) complex in Kohat, a strategically important city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The address is HCJX+G79, ISSB Rd, Kohat, Pakistan. For us, residing in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kohat is a familiar and accessible city. The location on ISSB Road makes it relatively easy to find once you are in Kohat Cantonment. Many candidates travel from across the province and even other parts of Pakistan to attend their selection tests here. Public transportation options are available to reach Kohat, and from the city center, local rickshaws or taxis can quickly take you to the ISSB complex. The well-established road networks leading to Kohat ensure that candidates can reach the facility without significant hassle. The distinct and well-marked nature of military installations also aids in navigation. For those of us arriving from more remote areas, planning travel in advance and inquiring about local transport options upon reaching Kohat is always a good idea. The secure environment of Kohat Cantonment also adds to the peace of mind for candidates and their families.
While Johar Hall itself is primarily a venue for selection tests, the broader ISSB Kohat facility, of which Johar Hall is a part, offers a comprehensive range of services related to the officer selection process for the Pakistan Armed Forces. These services are crucial for evaluating candidates comprehensively:
- Psychological Tests: Conducting a series of written psychological tests, including Word Association Tests (WAT), Situation Reaction Tests (SRT), and Picture Story Writing, to assess a candidate's personality traits, emotional stability, and intellectual capabilities.
- Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks: Facilitating various outdoor and indoor group tasks, such as group discussions, group planning exercises, progressive group tasks, half-group tasks, individual obstacles, and command tasks, to evaluate leadership potential, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and physical endurance.
- Interviews with Deputy President and Psychologist: Conducting in-depth one-on-one interviews with candidates by a Deputy President (a senior military officer) to assess their personality, motivation, general knowledge, and suitability for an officer's role, and by a Psychologist to further evaluate their psychological profile.
- Physical Tests (Preliminary): While preliminary physical tests (like running, push-ups, sit-ups) are often conducted at initial recruitment centers, the ISSB might involve certain physical aspects or observations during GTO tasks.
- Biometric and Document Verification: Thorough verification of candidates' original documents and biometric data to ensure authenticity and eligibility.
- Accommodation and Mess Facilities: Providing lodging and meal services for candidates during their stay for the duration of the selection process, typically 4-5 days.
- Medical Examination (Initial): Although detailed medical examinations are usually conducted by military hospitals after ISSB recommendation, a preliminary medical check-up might be part of the ISSB process to ensure candidates are fit enough to undertake the tests.
- Guidance and Briefings: Providing comprehensive briefings to candidates on the schedule, procedures, and expectations of the tests they will undergo, ensuring clarity and preparedness.
Johar Hall and the broader ISSB Kohat facility stand out for several distinct features and highlights that are vital for any aspiring officer from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa:
- Comprehensive Selection Methodology: The ISSB employs a scientific and holistic approach to selection, evaluating candidates across multiple dimensions including intellect, personality, physical fitness, and leadership potential, ensuring that only the most suitable individuals are recommended.
- Experienced Evaluators: The testing panels comprise highly experienced and trained military officers (GTOs, Deputies) and psychologists, ensuring a professional and objective assessment process. Their expertise helps in accurately identifying the desired traits for future officers.
- Fair and Unbiased Process: The entire selection procedure is designed to be fair and transparent. As many candidates highlight, the emphasis is on a candidate's genuine intention and determination rather than pre-conceived notions.
- Rigorous Assessment: The multi-day testing regimen ensures a thorough evaluation, minimizing the chances of unsuitable candidates being selected. This rigor is a hallmark of the Armed Forces' commitment to quality leadership.
- State-of-the-Art Facilities: While rooted in a long history, the ISSB centers, including Kohat, are equipped with the necessary infrastructure for conducting both indoor psychological and interview sessions (like those often held in Johar Hall) and outdoor physical and group tasks.
- Historical Significance: ISSB Kohat holds historical significance as one of the original and key selection centers in Pakistan, having been established in Kohat after the amalgamation of various selection boards post-1947.
- Pathway to National Service: For us, the youth, it represents the primary and most direct pathway to achieving our dream of becoming a commissioned officer in the Pakistan Armed Forces, a career path highly respected for its honor, discipline, and opportunity for national contribution.
- Character Building: Even for those not selected, the ISSB experience is often described as a valuable learning opportunity, providing insights into self-assessment and the qualities required for leadership.
As a highly specialized military selection board, Johar Hall, and by extension, the ISSB Kohat facility, does not engage in "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense that a university or business might. Its purpose is solely to evaluate candidates for officer induction into the Pakistan Armed Forces based on a meritocratic system. Therefore, there are no discounts on fees, seasonal admissions offers, or package deals. However, for aspiring candidates from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the inherent "offer" is the opportunity itself:
- Equal Opportunity for All: The fundamental 'special offer' is the provision of an equal and merit-based opportunity for all eligible citizens of Pakistan, including those from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to compete for a prestigious career as an officer in the armed forces, regardless of their socio-economic background.
- Subsidized Evaluation: The cost of the extensive psychological, physical, and interview-based evaluation process, along with accommodation and meals during the assessment period, is heavily subsidized by the government. Candidates pay a minimal fee for the entire process, which is a significant 'offer' given the comprehensive nature of the assessment.
- Career Pathway: The greatest 'promotion' is the unparalleled career path offered upon successful selection – a life of honor, discipline, professional development, and service to the nation, complete with competitive pay, benefits, and retirement plans, which are inherently more valuable than any temporary discount.
Candidates should focus on preparing themselves intellectually, physically, and psychologically for the rigorous selection process, as that is the only 'entry requirement' beyond meeting the basic eligibility criteria for the respective armed force branch.

Many memories with this place. I attended all tests with my passion. I applied for Flying Officer in PAF. There is no defined criteria for selection in ISSB in my thinking, ISSB only see the intention and determination of candidate. If you are going for tests, you should be unbiased and neutral. GTO and Deputy and Psychiatrist are main characters.
